I have the same problem and it took a very long time to narrow it down to citric acid. However some citrus foods seem to be less of a problem than others. Lemons and particularly soft drinks with citric acid will keep we awake with itching for three nights. Actually the itching is always at it's worst the night after. I don't get a rash but I would compare the symptoms to the terrible itching you might get after bad sunburn. My skin just crawls thinking about it! Never had a rash though...
